Plywood

Plywood is a type of engineered board made from thin sheets of wood, called plies or wood veneers. The layers are glued together, each with its grain at right angles to adjacent layers for greater strength. There are usually an odd number of plies, as the symmetry makes the board less prone to warping [1], and the grain on the outside surfaces runs in the same direction. The plies are bonded under heat and pressure with strong adhesives, usually phenol formaldehyde resin,[2] making plywood a type of composite material. Plywood is sometimes called the original engineered wood.[3]

The adhesives used in plywood have become a point of concern, due to the off gassing of the formaldehyde. Both urea formaldehyde and phenol formaldehyde are carcinogenic, so their use is undesirable. Many manufacturers are turning to "Greener Products" as government regulations become stronger against the use of these adhesives. [4]

A common reason for using plywood instead of plain wood is its resistance to cracking, shrinkage, twisting/warping, and its general high degree of strength. In addition, plywood can be manufactured in sheets far wider than the trees from which it was made. It has replaced many dimensional lumbers on construction applications for these reasons.

How to Choose Eco Friendly Flooring

Step1
Choose rapidly renewable materials. Rapidly renewable materials are those whose regrowth cycle is less than ten years, which is good for the planet because you're not using up resources that take a long time to regenerate. Many hardwoods used for hardwood flooring have a regrowth cycle of over forty years. Good flooring choices that are rapidly renewable include cork, bamboo or linoleum.
Step2
Make sure that any wood flooring you are using is FSC certified. The United Stated Forest Stewardship Council has a program in place that tells you each step wood has taken along its supply chain. If you buy FSC certified wood, you can rest assured that it was harvested in a healthy, sustainable manner that had minimal impact on the environment.
Step3
Use low-emitting materials. Every material emits VOC's, or volatile organic compounds. These VOC's are gases which can cause respiratory problems in some people, especially those with asthma. The key to choosing flooring that doesn't hurt the environment is to choose low VOC materials. For carpets, you can be assured the materials are low VOC if they meet the Carpet and Rug Institutes's Green Label program. With any other material including adhesives or other flooring materials, look for options that contain no urea formaldehyde.
Step4
Choose flooring made from recycled materials, such as reclaimed wood or recycled glass or metal tiles. They options are eco -friendly in that they are reusing existing resources instead of using up new ones.
Step5
Go local. The most eco-friendly flooring choice you can make is to buy regional materials. These include materials that are extracted, manufactured and distributed by local businesses. Buying local materials means less impact from transporting long distances.
